The Candle Of Love
Devotional for Sunday, December 22, 1996 by Ken Stright
Fourth Sunday in AdventLuke 1:78-79 - The dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet in the way of peace.
In that great hymn, My God, I thank Thee, the end of the second
verse proclaims,
- That in the darkest spot of earth
Some love is found.
The light has shone in the darkness of the night and the darkness cannot overcome it, cannot even comprehend it.
The Christmas season, and the sister celebration of Hanukkah for our Jewish friends, are festivals of light - from candles in our homes, to massive displays of colour and Christmas scenes around town, even down to the flashing bulb on Rudolf's nose.
It's our way of snubbing our noses at the darkness, at the cold of Christmas, and for those of faith, it is our way of welcoming the Light of the World, the Light that will never be extinguished.
Are you ready to receive the Light of the World and to allow that Light to break in on your darkness and be a light to guide and a lamp for the path?
Prayer: God, we have lingered too long in the darkness of sin and despair. Fill us with your light that we may shine before a needy world. Through the One who is light indeed. Amen.
