Counting The Cost

Devotional for Thursday, March 6, 1997 by Ken Stright

Luke 14:27-28 - [Jesus said:] "Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost?"

Does it mean anything any more to be a member of the church of Jesus Christ? Do we count the cost, if in fact we think of it at all? Does a promise contain anything more than empty air?

I wish the simple and certain answer was 'yes' -

yes, a promise is a promise.
yes, it matters to be a member.
yes, I count the cost and willingly pay.

But reality reminds me that what we pay more often than not is lip service to our Saviour. Often we care little for the Kingdom, and the only cost we count is the rent at the end of the month.

I wonder how many have ever re-visited their confirmation questions and given themselves a report card on their Christian progress throughout the many years that have passed from then until now?

Have you?

Why not spend a few moments today reflecting on the commitment you have made and the covenant with God that is yours through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayer: Lord God, help me today to count the cost of following you and with knowledge and understanding gladly pay the price to the glory of your Holy Name. Amen.
