Down To The Potter's House

Devotional for Monday, March 10, 1997 by Robin Ross

The work of a potter moulding the clay at his wheel is well understood as a Biblical analogy of the relationship between God and us, His people, because the basics of the potter's craft have changed very little over the centuries.

As the potter settles himself, facing his stone wheelhead, seated on his wobbly little stool, his eyes light up and a quizzical smile lines his face as he thinks of the wonderful possibilities that exist in the clay between his hands. Perhaps he sees a beautiful vase or an exquisitely-shaped goblet fit for a king. He has great intentions, purposes and desires for this clay, as he tenderly begins to impress upon it the form he wishes.

Jeremiah 18:1-2 - This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: "Go down to the potter's house, and there I will give you my message."

Perhaps this was part of the message that the prophet received: How much excitement and anticipation fills God's heart as He looks on us and touches us with His creative hands. If only His will can be done, the wondrous things that can happen in our life! Rather than seeing God's will for us as a stern fate, we need to see the wisdom and beauty of God's loving plan for our life.

Prayer: Lord, remind me often of the marvel of Your plan for our lives. Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done, in earth, in the clay of my life, as it is in heaven. Amen.
