To Destroy A Nation
Devotional for Monday, March 17, 1997 by Robin Ross
The work of a potter moulding the clay at his wheel is well understood as a Biblical analogy of the relationship between God and us, his people, because the basics of the potter's craft have changed very little over the centuries.Jeremiah 18:6-8 - "Like clay in the hand of the potter, so you are in my hand, O house of Israel," declares the Lord. "If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned."
If God says that He can tear down and destroy a nation, like clay in a potter's hand, it makes me wonder what He might be doing in our nation at the present time. We are so concerned about violence, abuse, injustice, vandalism, murders, and crime, and yet it seems that the more we are concerned about it, the more there is of it. Crime drains resources out of both the public and private purse, and threatens to undo our society. The root cause of crime is lack of respect for any divine superintendency over the affairs of mankind. What is it that makes someone do the right thing when no-one is watching? It has to be our conscience - the realization that God is watching, even if no-one else is, and we will have to give an account to Him. The sooner our society begins to repent of its evil, the sooner God will relent of the disaster He has planned.
Prayer: O God, begin that work of bringing about repentance in our society, and use us who are concerned about it, as Your vessels to bring it about. Amen.
