What Are You Worth?

Devotional for Friday, March 21, 1997 by Robin Ross

1 Peter 1:18-19 - It was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed... but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

When I was young, I remember reading about a chemist who calculated what a human being was worth. In terms of the market value of the various salts and minerals involved, it was about $2.00-$3.00. With inflation it might be $10.00 now. But with recent advances in genetic engineering, this figure has been revised drastically. If biochemists set about to manufacture all the proteins, enzymes, amino acids and RNA and DNA genetic molecules that make up a human body, it would cost over 6 quadrillion dollars. Then all those raw materials would have to be assembled into cells and tissues. And when all that was done, they would have a dead body. No-one has any idea how to give life to such a body. (And some people have the audacity to say it all happened by chance?)

What tremendous wisdom and power is possessed by the God who created us. But what is a human being worth? It depends on what the market will bear. In Bible days, a slave could be redeemed and set free for 30 pieces of silver. That was also the price the Pharisees paid Judas to betray Jesus to them. No-one today could afford to pay 6 quadrillian dollars. But God showed us our real value when His Son Jesus gave His very life to redeem us and set us free from the power of sin and death. If God loved us that much, that He would die for us, then we must be worth everything to Him. Is He worth everything to us?

Prayer: Lord, these days many of us wonder how much we're worth, if anything at all. Impress us with the value You place upon us by the price You were willing to pay for us, Your own precious blood. Amen.
