Prayer Of Abandonment (1)

Devotional for Thursday, June 12, 1997 by Grant Muir

At the beginning of this century, Charles de Foucauld, a deeply committed servant of Christ, took these words from the Lord's Prayer and made them personal for the immense benefit of folk who are seeking to grow spiritually.

This prayer has moved me so intensely that I have committed it to memory and use it again and again. It expresses in such precise words my deepest longings and greatest concerns as I seek to live the Christian life day by day. I have used it with elders in session meetings, as a unison prayer in public worship, in opening devotions for committee meetings, and, at times, I have simply offered it to friends as a rich source for spiritual growth. And now I offer to you his "Prayer of Abandonment" to God.

Father,

I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will. Whatever you may do, I thank you: I am ready for all; I accept all. Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures -- I wish no more than this, O Lord.

Into your hands I commend my soul: I offer it to you with all the love of my heart, for I love you Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into your hands, without reserve, and with boundless confidence,

For you are my Father.

Amen.
