The Journey's End

Devotional for Sunday, June 22, 1997 by Ken Stright

Hebrews 12:1-2 - Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

The phone rings in the night. A childhood friend has just died. I sit in the dark and wonder again about life and what life means, especially for her now that death has come.

She found out many years ago that life would be short and she lived intently every day. She never gave in and she never gave up and now she is gone. She leaves us a wonderful example of a zest for life, a model of how to live life to the full, and how to transform every adversity into a victory.

We never really talked faith talk since those childhood days. One day out of the blue as we were walking together she said, 'Ken, pray for me. I need help.'

'Pray for us now and at the hour of our death.'

Prayer: We entrust into your care and keeping those who have touched our lives along the way. We take a moment today to remember half-forgotten friends from the distant past and how they have affected our lives. In Jesus' name. Amen.
