The Storms Of Life

Devotional for Monday, July 28, 1997 by Robin Ross

Philippians 1:6 - Be confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

Robert Louis Stevenson told the story of a ship at sea during a terrible storm. The passengers were is great distress. After a time, one of them, against orders, went up on deck and made his way to the pilot house. When the seaman on duty saw how frightened the man looked, he gave him a reassuring smile. Then the man turned and went back to the other passengers with these words of comfort: "I have seen the face of the pilot and he smiled. All is well."

I love that old hymn,

    Jesus, Saviour, pilot me
    Over life's tempestuous sea.

Sometimes the storms of life get pretty rough, what with the kids going wrong, unemployment, drugs, crime, family discord and illness. If we can just keep in view the face of Jesus, and trust in His competence to guide us when the going gets rough, we'll make it through. It's when we get to thinking that there's no hope, and that all is lost, that our ship is likely to crack up on the rocks. Jesus has a plan for our lives, and when we trust Him to bring us through the storms, He will. It's very important to ask Jesus to be in our lives, where He can guide us from inside. And we'll know by the smile on His face that "all is well".

Prayer: Help us, O Lord, never to give up hope. With Your strong hand on the wheel of our life, we know that there's always hope. In Jesus' name. Amen.
