I Feel Completely Secure

Devotional for Sunday, August 3, 1997 by Grant Muir

Psalm 16:7-11 - I praise the Lord because he guides me, and in the night my conscience warns me. I am always aware of the Lord's presence; he is near, and nothing can shake me. And so I am thankful and glad, and I feel completely secure, because you protect me from the power of death, and the one whom you love you will not abandon to the world of the dead. You will show me the path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy and brings me pleasure forever.

At this present moment I do feel completely secure. Psalm 16 was my first experience with Christian meditation based on Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "Meditating On the Word." I know every word of Psalm 16 by heart. I have listened to it and prayed it many, many times. It has become part of me.

The cries for protection raised in verse 1 have been dealt with in a marvellous way. Fears and anxiety have somehow been overcome even as I type these words. A sense of the joy, peace and power is all around me. In a way this is a complete surprise. It is just happening as I write. In the depths of my being, however, I know and recognize the amazing work of God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit in a soul that has waited in silence for God alone.

Prayer:

    Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
    That saved a wretch like me.
    I once was lost but now am found,
    Was blind but now I see.

    Through many dangers, toils and snares,
    I have already come;
    'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
    And grace will lead me home.

Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! Amen.
