Devotional for Friday, August 8, 1997 by Robin Ross
Romans 10:9-10 - If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation.Twenty-five years ago, before the environment was a public concern, my brother Martin was a Park Naturalist in one of the Rocky Mountain National Parks. When he first arrived, he was instructed in the various issues of ecology in the park environment, like the dangers of careless littering and the problems created by feeding animals. At first, he couldn't get very excited about these issues, but as he spoke to audience after audience about these things, he found himself becoming more and more convinced of their truth. He told me that if he talked as much about his Christian faith, he would become likewise convinced about what he believed as a Christian.
The more we talk about our faith, the more strongly we will believe it. If words of faith cross our lips, they produce more faith in our hearts. If we express words of doubt, they reinforce the doubt that grows in our hearts. St. Paul said that with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation. In other words, in order to be saved, we must not just believe in Jesus in our hearts, but also confess our faith verbally to others. E. Stanley Jones wrote: "It is a law of the mind, that that which is not expressed dies. All expression deepens impression." So, deepen your experience of faith in Jesus by telling someone else about it!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we already know we should be telling others about You. Rebuke the fear that binds us and give us boldness to be ambassadors for You. In Your name. Amen.
