Silver Linings

Devotional for Saturday, August 16, 1997 by Robin Ross

Romans 8:28 - And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

The two little girls were staring glumly out the window. From the dismal, gray, overcast sky, rain was falling steadily, soaking the back yard. Watching the tiny drops run down the window pane was boring, compared to playing in the sandbox outside, which was just out of the question. So, looking at the forbidden sandbox just increased their gloom. "Why does the rain come, Mommy?" asked a despairing little voice. "Because of the black clouds," answered Mommy. "But why the black clouds, Mommy?"

How we resent being saddled with undesirable or hurtful circumstances. It all seems so unfair. Fortunately we can know that God does have a good and loving reason for everything He allows to happen to us. He promised that all things work together for good to those who love God. He is able to weave even death into the fabric of His wonderful purposes. When we accept the black clouds of life as part of God's will for us, we can truly be set free, because then we discover the wonders of God's grace, as things do work out for the best, in the end.

Prayer: O God, sometimes it seems so unreasonable to believe that the horrible things that happen to us can actually be part of Your purpose for us. Thank You for Your assurances that it really is true. Help us to live triumphantly in light of that truth. In Jesus' name. Amen.
