Letter To The Editor

Devotional for Wednesday, September 24, 1997 by Ken Stright

2 Timothy 4:2-3 - I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favourable or unfavourable; convince, rebuke, encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine.

    Dear Sir:

Times change and so too do community newspapers. I was looking at an old paper from over one hundred years ago. Among all the other items was the sermon from the Kirk Church that week written out in its entirety. This would have been done, I presume, by one of your reporters taking down every word and reproducing it faithfully for the community to consider.

    Yes, times have changed.

I visited your offices last fall and suggested the inclusion of a weekly devotional item of a few lines, a few thoughts to guide the day or brighten the moment. I thank your paper for the consideration given to the idea.

By the way, I never did hear back from you.

Shortly after, however, began the weekly horoscopes. Maybe that was answer enough. I know I cannot write as well as the syndicated horoscopes, or read the future and thereby assure your readers of a winning lottery ticket or a chance to meet a tall dark stranger, but I can share a bit of good news about God's love in Jesus Christ. Yes, times are changing and maybe I should learn to 'go with the flow'. How about a column on Palm reading, or maybe a local version of Dear Abby. Let's call it 'Counselling with Ken. Or how about...

      Yours, tongue in cheek -
        Ken Stright

Prayer: God, help us find new ways of sharing your good news through Jesus Christ. Amen.
