A Faithful Servant

Devotional for Wednesday, October 8, 1997 by Robin Ross

Matthew 25:21 - His master replied, "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!"

With all the recent talk about Promise Keepers Conventions, I'd like to make a comment, and tell about an amazing experience I had at a PK Convention. First, the comment. The media cannot seem to believe that being a leader in one's home is not a power grab, but PK recommends that men lead their wives and families by serving them, as Christ leads the Church by serving her, and laying down His life for her.

Now for the experience. One strength of PK is their support of the local church as the locus of God's work in the world. They encourage men to get behind their churches and pastors. To underline this, in the middle of this convention, they called all the pastors down to the front so they could pray for them. And as we streamed down from all over the Coliseum, the men rose to their feet to give us a standing ovation. Of course, they didn't face the front "politely"; they turned around to face the pastors coming forward. As I walked down the steps and across the floor, greeted by thousands of smiling, clapping, cheering men, it was as if I had been suddenly transported to the streets of heaven, lined with hosts of angels and throngs of saints clapping and cheering for me at my arrival. In my mind, this was directly connected to the suffering I had gone through here on earth to fulfill the work God had given me to do. With this kind of reception in glory, it was all worthwhile, and the Lord's words echoed in my ears, "Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord!"

When the going gets tough, we all need to maintain the perspective of eternity. From God's point of view, it is all worthwhile, if we can just be faithful.

Prayer: Lord, not everyone understands what we Christians believe, and it grieves us to be misrepresented. But thank You that for Your faithful people, it will all prove to be worthwhile when Your eternal judgements are handed down. Speak, Lord, to those who do not yet understand. Amen.
