Flattery Will Get You Nowhere

Devotional for Tuesday, December 30, 1997 by Ken Stright

Psalm 12:3-4 - May the Lord cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, those who say, "With our tongues we will prevail; our lips are our own - who is our master?"

Forget God and forget that there is ultimate truth worth striving for and indeed you get a society in which people cannot trust each other. Remember the Flatterer in The Pilgrim's Progress? The flatterer always gives to the flattered a false opinion and so the premise of the society that is built is false and a society is formed which degenerates in its standards and in what it does for its citizens, like the false society built on apartheid which declared some better than others according to birth and skin colour. We can never settle for such lies in our society.

Prayer: Lord, open our lips and our mouths shall declare your praise. Keep us from all falsehood and lead us to Him who is the truth, even Jesus Christ. Amen.
