Light And Salvation

Devotional for Monday, January 5, 1998 by Ken Stright

Psalm 27:1 - The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

A new paraphrase from the new Book of Praise for this psalm begins: "Safe in your hands O God who made me, what can there be that I should fear? You are my light and my salvation; strong is your help when foes are near."

Christianity was meant for adversity. It just doesn't know what to do with prosperity. So suggested Dr. Phil Lee when speaking about conditions in which Christianity is either flourishing or floundering around the world. And the rule of thumb seems to be that in adversity the light of the Lord shines brightly and in prosperity that light is overwhelmed by the glitter and the gold and the glory and the glamour of life in the fast lane where every conceivable luxury and every material benefit is simply taken for granted.

Prayer: Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me! Amen.
