The Sound Of Your Voice

Devotional for Thursday, May 14, 1998 by Mary Daniel

Psalm 55:17 - Evening and morning, and at noon will I pray, and cry aloud; and he shall hear my voice.

E-mail is so wonderful. It is quick and inexpensive. It enables you think out a message, change it, fix it, and "zip it off". An answer can be obtained immediately. Messages can be sent back and forth several times a day. It certainly cuts away down on long distance phone bills.

And it certainly cuts down on the "personal touch".

This has been brought home rather starkly in the past couple of weeks. First, my sister-in-law called and said that as wonderful as e-mail was, she didn't want to forget the sound of my voice. I was very touched. Then about a week later, I received two more similar phone calls from friends: "E-mail's fine, but I just wanted to hear your voice". And just recently, I was able to "put a voice to an e-mail" for the first time. There's just nothing like the "personal touch".

God needs to hear our voices too. And although he will never forget the sound of our voices, he needs to hear them in our songs, in our praise, in our prayers, in our grace. It is we who must not put God "on e-mail", and we must not forget the sound of His voice.

Prayer: Our Heavenly Father, help us to be mindful each day to take the time to "listen" to your voice. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
