All Things New

Devotional for Thursday, May 21, 1998 by Ken Stright

Philippians 2:5,6 - Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself.

Hugh Martin in a wonderful work, "The Parables of the Gospels", tells the story of a rather rough, uncultivated man who fell in love with a beautiful vase in a shop window. He bought the vase and put it on the mantelpiece in his room. There it became a kind of judgement on its surroundings. He had to clean up the room to make it worthy of the vase. The curtains looked dingy beside it. The old chair with the stuffing coming out of the seat would not do. The wallpaper and the paint needed renewing. Gradually the whole room was transformed.

The connection is obvious when you consider our lives and the total change that occurs when the mind of Christ becomes our motivation.

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, we need to be made new through you. We need to follow in your footsteps and take our place in your coming reign of love and peace. Make us new and make us yours, for we ask it in the name above every name. Amen.
