I Need A Break

Devotional for Thursday, June 25, 1998 by Ken Stright

Genesis 2:1-3 - Thus the heavens and the earth were finished and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested.

It's getting closer. Summer is just around the corner and I am really in need.

This year I've decided I'm going on holiday. I've had enough of vacations for awhile. Yes, I definitely need a holiday. What's the difference, you ask?

A vacation (coming from vacate, to escape) is running away from, fleeing the rat race, the schedules, the never-ending committees and 'stuff' that fills life. There are times I run away and vacate my regular life... but not this year.

This year I am planning a holiday!

A holiday (coming from holy day) is sacred. A holiday is a time for renewal and re-creation, and being made new and holy and healthy, and knowing that one has taken one's shoes off and stood on holy ground.

Yes, definitely I need a holiday, and just maybe that special place deep in the wilderness of Kedge will offer the silence and solitude that makes holidays really holy.

Happy holidays!

Prayer: Lord of Life, go with us into the renewing and refreshing days of summer and quiet time and holy holidays and a return to primary purposes and people who make life so rich and full. Thank you, in Jesus' name. Amen.
