Twas The Night Revisited

Devotional for Tuesday, December 22, 1998 by Kathleen Ageton

Luke 10:16 - He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.
2 Corinthians 4:4 - The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

    'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
    Not a-one thought was stirring, not even an ounce;
    The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
    In hopes that some nice presents soon would be there;

    The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
    While visions of Nintendo danced in their heads;
    And mamma in her silk shift and I in my mink
    Had just settled down with a long winter's drink.

    When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
    I sprang from the lounge to see what was the matter.
    Away to the window I flew in a rage
    Tore open the shutters, my temper engage.

    When, what to my glowering eyes should appear?
    But a big group of carollers all filled with cheer.
    With a little old leader so lively and quick
    I knew in a moment they'd make me feel sick.

    They sang about such a marvellous birth
    I wondered what-all this message was worth.
    Where was Santa to chase them away?
    I wanted some fun, and some food, and some play.

    They kept on singing about this child,
    Holy and humble, gentle and mild.
    I'd heard enough I wanted no more;
    So I filled up my lungs and began to roar:

    "Now, dash it! now, darn it, you horrible vixen!
    Please stop it at once; to hit you I'm fixin'."
    They sang one more song about Jesus the King
    Their message was smarting and starting to sting.

    I turned to my TV all glowing inside,
    I glanced at a sitcom, no need to decide.
    I closed the window and turned out the light
    Happy Christmas to all! Now let me sleep tight.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help us to display Your love, even to those who turn away from You. Let us remember to honour You during this season. In Your name we pray. Amen.
