A Journey Of A Thousand Miles

Devotional for Friday, February 5, 1999 by Mary Daniel

Isaiah 40:29 - He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increaseth strength.

When we were young mothers in our late twenties, my friend's husband suffered a stroke, and although the paralysis was very temporary, his speech impediment was not. This resulted in my friend not only having to learn to continue speech therapy with him, but also having to take over his business, about which she knew very little.

Her sheer determination, coupled with the fear of losing their livelihood, saw her through many challenging situations. As we lived hundred of miles apart, my means of support for her was primarily through letters and the odd phone call. She was one who loved having little sayings around her home, and one time I sent her a plaque, which said simply, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

Recently, I found myself relaying that same quotation to another friend but this time I said, "Perhaps we should add, 'and that step, with prayer'". We can bolster the single steps of others with our prayers, especially and most importantly, the steps of those for whom prayer is not a part of their life. Their determination and their strength can be given to them from God, through us. It costs nothing but a little of our time.

In the words of one of our writers several months ago, "It is the most and the least we can do for someone."

Prayer: May we remember even one friend a day, Lord, for whom our prayers would bring strength. In your name we pray. Amen.
