A Little Child (1)

Devotional for Sunday, February 7, 1999 by David Leggatt

Isaiah 11:6 - The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. (KJV)
Mark 10:14 - But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. (KJV)

As a minister I have always felt that it is important to include children in the worship service. This, to me, usually meant a children's story which might, or might not, be on the sermon topic.

It wasn't until we celebrated our last communion service and then the next week celebrated baptism that I finally came to understand just how important including children in all the service was.

I had invited the children of the Sunday school to come back up for communion near the end of the service. I had told them before they left that we were going to celebrate something very special that day and I wanted them to be part of the celebration.

One of the parents came up to me after the service and asked if I had wanted the children to actually take communion. That, I said, was up to each individual child and the parents. I asked if his son, Curtis, had taken communion. His father said that he had and that he seemed to know what it was all about. Curtis, in the simple ways of a child, told his dad that the bread represented the body of Christ and the wine the blood of Christ. Because we ate and drank in this ceremony we were remembering all the good things Christ does for us. This out of the mouth of a six year old.

Prayer: Lord help to remember that Jesus told us to always include the little children in our worship. Many times these little ones can teach us what the real meaning of worship is. For all these dear children we give you thanks. Amen.
