We Only Have To Ask

Devotional for Saturday, February 20, 1999 by Evonne Isaak

Matthew 7:7-8 - Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. (NIV)

A few weeks ago, I was introduced to the idea of a written Prayer Binder from a chapter in Carole Mayhall's new book, Come Walk With Me. Lately, my prayer life had felt stale and stilted so my field was ready for tilling. I'd read that faith is much increased when God's answers to prayers are recorded and kept for future reference.

This Prayer Binder concept is simple - draw a line down the middle of the page, write the requests on one side, the answers on the other, then separate prayer categories (like Family, etc.) into different days of the week.

Already the Lord's response to my written prayers has been so swift that I'm feeling humbled at such concrete evidence of His love and care for me in every aspect of my life. As I write this, it has occurred to me that Jesus must have been standing there on the other side of the door, just waiting for me to knock and ask. So simple, yet I feel as if the chapter should start with: Warning, proceed with caution - and expect your life to change.

Prayer: Father, thank you for the wondrous gift of your son, Jesus. His mercy, love and grace are so awesome that tears smart my eyelids in humility and gratitude for the gifts He bestows upon us - if we but ask. Amen.
