Extra Hours In The Air

Devotional for Monday, February 22, 1999 by Michael Steckel

1 Thessalonians 5:18 - Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

One aspect of my job includes travelling to various places around the United States. I do not mind going someplace to do my job, but the one thing that I do not enjoy is the actual flying to the destination. From Alaska, usually my travel time is over 12 hours, making for a long day. These days, airplanes are always packed, and I feel like I'm being cattle-herded onboard and then jammed into my seat. Then I find that most airline food is not that great, so I don't eat too well on the days I travel.

I have realized lately, though, that being upset with travelling only makes it worse. I get myself all worked up, instead of relaxing and trying to make the most of my time in the air. I find now that I can usually read a good book through on my travel days. I am also thankful that my company allows me to keep the frequent flier miles. I save them in case I ever need to fly back to where my parents, brother and sister live, which would cost me a bit.

Recently I came across today's verse, "Give thanks in all circumstances." When I read it, I realized that I was not being thankful in all circumstances. I was only thankful when things seemed to go my way. I took a step back, looked at myself, and realized that I was being very selfish. If I cannot give thanks to God for all that he gives me, then I am egocentric. I do not have Him as the center of my life. God has given me salvation through his great love and grace, though I have no merit to receive it. Now if God loves me this much, can I not be thankful to him for all that he does for me? Can I not show my thankfulness every day? Can I not give thanks to Him who really deserves that thanks?

Prayer: Lord, I thank you for all that you have done for me. I thank you for the lessons you teach me and for the blessings you bestow upon me. I thank you for loving me. I pray that I may never forget to be thankful to you for the things you have done for me. Amen.
