Upside Down

Devotional for Tuesday, March 16, 1999 by Mary Jane Hanson

Isaiah 40:31 - But those who trust in the Lord for help will find their strength renewed. They will rise on wings like eagles; they will run and not get weary; they will walk and not grow weak. (GNB)

I pray for God's guidance. I continue to be frustrated in my career. I sit silently and ask God to speak to me.

Later that evening I take out a counted cross-stitch picture I started months before and laid aside. It has a complex colour scheme. I am stitching an eagle with today's scripture verse as the text for the picture. I study the pattern trying desperately to find my place.

I cannot seem to find my spot until I turn the picture upside down. I see the pattern right away. I start to stitch eagerly, making sure the stitches are outstanding so that I will not lose my way this time.

Perhaps Isaiah 40:31 is my compass. I need to wait and see the Lord's plan. I get the feeling that God will turn my life upside down while I am waiting.

Prayer: Wise and holy God, it is not easy waiting for answers to prayers. Help us to see that you do answer prayers in your time. If we lose faith or direction, help us to wait for you to renew our hope and find our way. Amen.
