Who Am I?

Hebrews 2:6b-8a - What are human beings that you are mindful of them, or mortals, that you care for them? You have made them for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned them with glory and honour, subjecting all things under their feet. Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. (NRSV)I do two daily devotionals a day, one in the morning from this Daily devotional page and then one in the evening from a devotional guide book. As I was reading today's scripture the other evening my mind started to wander. Who am I? What am I? I know the pat Christian answers: I am a child of God, I am a man and by calling I am a Minister of Word and Sacraments in the Presbyterian Church in Canada.Somehow this didn't really answer my question though. Physically I had the answer, but spiritually, in God's eyes, who am I? I read the scripture again but this time I went a little further and read verse 9 and then suddenly my mind was overcome with awe. Verse 9 says, "But we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone."
I am one of God's very own creations. I have been told that I am a little lower than the angels. Not a bad place to be when you think about the angels' job of continually praising God.
When we look at this verse we realize that Christ, himself, was put into the same position as you and I, "a little lower than the angels." Then he was raised from the dead and crowned with glory and honour. But isn't that what God says will happen to us? Just think about who we are now and what we will become: even greater than the angels. They will be subject to us. In my mind, that puts us right there beside Jesus Christ himself. We will sit, stand or bow before God and sing his praises and he will see us. He will actually see us, not as we are now but he will see us through Jesus and we will be even better than the angels. We will be children of God, just as Jesus is the Son of God.
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for dying for us, for taking on our sins and for being there for us as our advocate in heaven. We thank you that our Father does not see our sins because of you but sees us as children of God, who are even higher than the angels. May we always be kept mindful of what you have done for us. Amen.
