It's Simple

Devotional for Saturday, June 19, 1999 by Anne Russell

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. (NIV)

The other day I read one of the Daily devotionals, and when I finished, I said to my husband, "You know, that's really simple." He replied, "Sure it is, when it's finished." How true. But those words, "really simple when it's finished", struck a bell. I thought of how Christ gave His life for us, and now that that's finished, it has made it so simple for us who believe in Him. Some think life is simple without Him. They grow up, get a car, get a job, marry maybe, have a family, get a home together, have a successful life, see their children get married. But then they lose their parents in old age, and eventually die themselves, and it is finished, period, the end. How sad. This is the futility of the lives that many share in today's society. It's not so simple when it's finished.

But Jesus rose and defeated death, and has given life a meaning, a purpose. I thank God that He has given me a real, spiritual life that I share with Him in quite a different way. That life gives hope in all of those places along the way that I mentioned before. We need that hope, because before life is finished, it's not that simple. There is a struggle. For example, though it seems simple now, you don't know how much I struggled with this devotional. Yet in every struggle that life brings, there is a reward. Christ in our hearts makes the difference. He gives meaning and purpose to a hopeless life.

Prayer: Lord, give meaning to any of us who live with no hope. Jesus, You died upon the cross for our sins so that we might be forgiven and have eternal life. Lord Jesus, come into my heart, and bring Your life. Amen.
