Blest Be The Tie That Binds

One of the first things a boy learns to make in Boy Scouts is a tripod. I am constantly amazed how one can take three sticks that cannot even stand up by themselves and by simply leaning them against one another and lashing them together create a structure capable of standing on its own. It is the very weakness of the individual sticks, the act of leaning on one another, that gives the tripod its strength.

The tripod is also an excellent analogy to our own experiences in life. As we go through life we find that it is often impossible to stand by ourselves. The burdens are simply too great. However, by leaning on others, we find the necessary support to carry the load and move on with life. Moreover, we often find that those we think we are leaning on for support are, in fact, leaning on us and we end up supporting each other.

However, our natural tendency is to try and stand on our own, and to expect others to do so as well. It is only when we come to accept Christ into our lives; when we acknowledge that we are incapable of our own salvation and that as followers of Christ we are his servants, bound to do his will; that we can learn to lean on others for support and to provide support for others who lean on us. It is our common faith that brings us together and binds us to one another and to the Lord; it is this union which gives us our strength.

Prayer: Lord, open our eyes to our own weaknesses and our need for Your grace; and let this knowledge be the seed of faith which binds us to You and gives us the strength to go forward in Your service. Amen.
