Instant Communication

Devotional for Tuesday, June 29, 1999 by Mary Jane Hanson

Psalm 116:1-2 - I love the Lord, because he hears me; he listens to my prayers. He listens to me every time I call to him. (GNB)

The other day at work I placed a telephone call to a person at Michigan State University. MSU is many miles away from Saskatoon. While we were on the telephone, she sent me e-mail. I logged into my e-mail account as we talked. Before our conversation was finished, I had the e-mail message. This was very hard for me to believe!

I have received e-mail messages from such places as Ireland and Siberia. It is truly wonderful how easy it is to communicate with colleagues and friends.

Technology is advancing at such a rapid rate. In the sweep of life, it is only a few years since computers became communication tools familiar to us. God, on the other hand, has been anxious to communicate with us since the beginning of time. Many of us do not take the time to communicate with Him. We prefer to develop our other relationships for profit and pleasure.

Most people have signed onto the Internet recently, and many use e-mail daily to communicate with friends, family and business associates. We do not, however, always get replies to our e-mail. Yet we have always been able to contact God. He not only hears our prayers, but answers them.

Computer technology is not consistent. We may be using the Internet, and suddenly the lines may go down. God is not like this. God is never too busy when we call to him!

We may choose not to talk with God, in the same manner as we may choose not to go online using the Internet. However, we have much to gain from being connected to God and receiving his direction in life. God can do much more for us than computers.

Prayer: Lord of the universe, thank you for being ever present, available whether we call or not. We thank you for technology that makes life easier, but we are ever mindful that no advances in science can take your place in our lives. Help us to be more faithful in our walk with you today and always. Amen.
