Spiritual Wisdom Teeth

Devotional for Monday, August 30, 1999 by Rosemary Hagedorn

Psalm 32:8 - I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. (NRSV)
Ephesians 5:25-26 - Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her; that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word. (RSV)

Every morning, I floss between my teeth, rinse and then brush my teeth. I brush them very vigorously and also massage my gums at the same time. I go through this routine faithfully every day. If I didn't go through this ritual of flossing between my teeth, brushing them and massaging my gums, I would end up with bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease, and eventually lose my teeth.

This ritual of taking care of my teeth reminded me of how important it is to study God's word diligently. As I take time to daily study His word, God equips me with life-changing truths and wisdom. His word washes and purifies me as I grow in the knowledge of Him.

Neglecting to study God's word would eventually affect my spiritual and physical life. But thanks be to God, He is always reminding us of His presence in our hearts and bringing us back to a closer relationship with Him.

Prayer: Father God, You are an awesome God. As we study Your word, we find that living apart from You is darkness. We thank You, Holy Father, for Your Son, Jesus, whose blood cleanses us from all sin. Amen.
