Keep Your Eye On The Broom

Devotional for Tuesday, January 18, 2000 by William Hamblen

Matthew 6:33 - But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (KJV)

Curling is a favourite sport for many in Canada during the winter months. It is a game that provides exercise and challenge, and is an opportunity to socialize and make friends.

One of the key things in curling is to keep your eye on the broom that is held by the skip or captain. By putting the correct turn on the rock and the right weight, the shot should travel to the desired position if one can "hit the broom". Learning this game in later life, I found one of my biggest mistakes was taking my eye off the broom and aiming the rock directly at the target. Needless to say, I did not achieve my objective.

In life I believe the same is true. We are so eager to acquire material objects, promotions, etc., that we forget that we should be aiming first for the kingdom of heaven; then other things, less important, will be given to us. So often getting the new car, the addition on the house, the cottage, or the boat is so important to us that we forget the Lord requires and demands our attention first.

Matthew 16:26 - What is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? (KJV)

I believe if we really try we can find time for daily meditation, prayer and reading our Bibles. Will you try it with me?
