Could You Do This, Please?
Devotional for Saturday, May 13, 2000 by Michael Steckel
Genesis 3:8-9 - Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But then the Lord God called to the man, "Where are you?" (NIV)My son is five years old, and I have started to expect more of him. If I ask him to do things, I expect them to be done. For example, if he is in his room playing, he pulls out many of his toys, so the place looks like a hurricane had gone through there. When he is done playing, I ask him to clean up his room, and most times he will put his toys away. There are times when he will not do what I ask. He will just sit and ignore me when I am speaking to him.
Sometimes this really gets me going, but I started to realize that I do the same thing in my relationship with God. There are times when I do listen to God and obey, and then there are times that I just ignore what God has said to me.
When Adam and Eve sinned they tried to hide from God. God called out, "Where are you?" not because he did not know, but as a question directed to Adam and Eve in regard to their relationship with God. It is easy to be ashamed of our sin. There are things I have done that I am not proud of. I can try to hide from God, but I cannot. Instead God comes and asks, "Where are you?" With this question, I can see my disobedience and how it separates me from God.
Prayer: Lord and God, we give thanks that you ask us, "Where are you?". You are a God who is always searching and will not let us just go, but instead comes to us to ask, "Where are you?" May we hear your call and respond to it. In Jesus' name. Amen.
