Saviour

Devotional for Friday, March 9, 2001 by Mary Jane Hanson

John 4:42 - We believe now, not because of what you said, but because we ourselves have heard him, and we know he is really the Saviour of the world. (GNB)

A few days ago, I went out to purchase lunch. I walked briskly to the restaurant on that cold winter day. While I ate my lunch, I picked up a newspaper that someone had left behind. I noticed that it was the February 20, 2001 edition of The Globe and Mail. One of the headlines read, "Why the Leafs need 'Eric Lindros, Saviour'". I was taken by surprise to see the word "Saviour" beside Eric Lindros' name.

Although I am not a hockey fan, I know that Lindros is a superstar. There is a difference between a superstar and a saviour, although a popular 1970's musical was called "Jesus Christ, Superstar". Webster's 9th New Collegiate Dictionary contains the following entries:

superstar: a star (as in sports or the movies) that is considered extremely talented, has great public appeal, and can command a high salary.

saviour: 1: one that saves from danger or destruction 2: one that brings salvation; [specific cap: JESUS]

Fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs want a saviour to help them win the prized Stanley Cup. These fans realize that they need help. Webster's dictionary acknowledges that Jesus is a Saviour. What about us? Surely we need a Saviour to save us from danger or destruction and to bring salvation, the ultimate prize. Do we realize our need, just like those Leaf fans?

Prayer: Jesus, you are the Saviour of the world. Help us all to realize that we need you in our lives to protect and save us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
