Rain, Rain Go Away?

What a miserable day! As I write, we are receiving the first of our spring rains. "April showers bring May flowers," the saying goes. It couldn't be closer to the truth!

It is only 5 degrees Celsius, and just pouring. As I dressed my two children and got ready to take the oldest to the bus, all I could think of was mud. We would need umbrellas and rubber boots, and there would be mud everywhere! Ughhh! As we left the house, we were singing, "Rain, rain go away, come again another day."

But even in the pouring rain, there was wonder around us. The children enjoyed splashing through every puddle we came upon. We watching streams of water rushing towards the storm sewers, taking leaves, pine cones and small sticks with them. The ground, newly thawed, was alive with earthworms. We had to stop to look at big ones and little ones, unusually-coloured ones and some that were contorted into odd shapes. And, recognizing God's bounty, my five-year-old exclaimed, "The birds are going to have a lot to eat today!" Our song soon changed to a joyful "Robin in the rain, what a saucy fellow!"

There is beauty around us, even when at first glance we cannot see it. Sometimes it takes a child's eyes to show us.

What a glorious day! Even in darkest despair, God gives. His work is all around us, if only we can see through the mud.

Prayer: Giving God, open our eyes, that we may see your wonder. Open our hearts, that we may know your love. Help us to see your works, even if they are at first hidden from us. Let us rejoice in all things, which come from You. Amen.
