Song Of Solomon

Devotional for Wednesday, February 13, 2002 by Jason DeHart

This warning is contained within the Song of Solomon three times. When God wants us to understand something, He repeats Himself.

Obviously, this is an important statement. Human beings search for love. They search for acceptance. Some find it; some don't. But neither of the two types receives the totality of love until they receive Christ.

John Milton wrote, "Love refines the thoughts and heart enlarges. Hath his seat in reason and is judicious. Is the scale by which to heavenly love thou mayst ascend, sunk not in carnal pleasure." [Paradise Lost]

If only Milton had rephrased that a little. Heavenly love is the way in which we ascend to human love. It is His perfect love shining through us and planted in us that helps us even to know what love is and how to love.

What do we look for in each other? Someone to hold us? We can ask God to hold us in the palm of His hand. Or do we look for someone to talk to? We can talk honestly, openly, and completely with God, in prayer. Nothing is hidden from Him anyway.

Do we seek beauty? Then know that our human condition is such that we can't even stand the presence of God's radiance. God is that beautiful. Shall we compare God to a summer's day? We can't. He made it.

What is the passion of our life? A person, a place, a car, a job? What do we look to above all else? God desires to be the source of fulfilment for our every need and desire. He longs to hear our voice and to dry our tears.

Love God. Serenade God. Adorn Him with praise. Romance God with all honesty. When we hold the hand of our spouse, a family member, or a friend, know that we can also hold Christ's hand, and hold it more firmly.

Prayer: Lord, You deserve top priority in our lives. Lord, You are the love of our lives, and we want to spend the rest of our days with You. Help us to love You and to honour You until the day we die and beyond. Help us to be faithful to You. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
