Blind Spot

Devotional for Saturday, March 23, 2002 by Anne Russell

Proverbs 4:20-22 - My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body. (NIV)

We all have a blind spot, a place where we cannot see.

I was travelling up the highway, not really paying the attention I should have. I was a little mesmerized with the traffic cruising along at the speed limit, when the car ahead slowed down. I checked my mirrors and attempted to pull out to pass. In a sudden awakening, I realized there was a car right beside me, in my blind spot.

Had I not acted immediately and drawn back into my lane of traffic, there could have been a mishap that was not intentional. Usually, I turn my head and make sure nothing is beside me, and pay more attention to what is going on around me.

When we enter onto the highway, we all have a responsibility for ourselves and for those around us.

In our journey of life, we also have a responsibility to keep alert at all times. We should not be passive in the driving force that leads us through life. When God gives us direction, we must not lose our focus on Him, or be led astray by Satan, who attempts to sneak up into our blind spot.

A collision with him could mean a total change in our direction, with devastating consequences.

Psalm 5:8 - Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies -- make straight your way before me. (NIV)

Prayer: Dear Lord, give us an attitude of complete awareness of Your presence always. Keep us attuned to the course You have laid out for us. Help us to be alert and aware of the blind spots in our lives, where Satan waits for us to make a mistake. Make straight our pathways, never wavering in our awareness and our love for You. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
