No Longer Timid

Devotional for Tuesday, July 2, 2002 by Mary Jane Hanson

2 Timothy 1:7 - For the Spirit that God has given us does not make us timid; instead the Spirit fills us with power, love, and self-control. (GNB)

When I was a teenager, I spent hours reading poetry. I particularly enjoyed modern poetry, the kind that does not rhyme. In secret, I also wrote poems and would share them with one or two special friends. I did not want to expose my innermost thoughts to others. They were private thoughts, and I suspect that I feared being rejected if people got to know the real me. I ceased writing poetry when I completed high school.

When I think back to that time, I realize that I have changed a great deal. I am no longer timid, but I cannot take credit for this change in character, because I know that it is God who is responsible for the positive changes. He did this by introducing me to the ministry of the Daily through an e-mail message from Robin Ross. This gave me the opportunity to write for Him, rather than for myself. When I first started writing for the Daily four years ago, approximately 300 people read it each day. Now almost 4000 people around the world read the devotionals, and I am no longer timid when it comes to sharing my thoughts with them. I rejoice that God has even emboldened me to embark on a new endeavour of having my devotionals published in a book, which has now been released. It is hard for me to believe that I am so bold.

God works with each of us to change us and help us become more Christ-like. This is a surprising process. We can take heart if we are timid because all things are possible with God. We can become bolder with God's help.

Acts 5:29 - Now, Lord, grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word.

Prayer: God, we praise you for changing each of us and making us more Christ-like. We ask you to help all timid people become bolder as they learn to place their trust in you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
