Thoughts On A Garbage Strike (2)

Devotional for Tuesday, September 10, 2002 by Brenda Wood

Philippians 3:7,8 - But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things. And count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ. (NASB)

The garbage has always been there, only now, it was very visible. Night after night, television news displayed the mess. It sure wasn't pretty. Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was in the midst of a garbage strike.

Trash is hardly ever pretty. If no one takes it away, streets and sidewalks get full. The landscape is spoiled. Odour, disease, and vermin begin to spread.

Like rubbish, sin was in our lives, invisible to us until the light of the Lord Jesus Christ shone upon it. When we saw it for what it was, we were more than content to let it go.

Occasionally, though, we forget how happy we were to get rid of that garbage. We start rooting around, like paparazzi looking for movie star knowledge, digging through stuff that has already been dumped.

Let's remember that our own personal garbage strike has already been settled. Jesus took everything to the dump and left it there.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that it is all over. Forgive us when we dig around in stuff that is old, decayed, and not worthy of remembrance. Help us to remember that You have made us brand new. Amen.
