Flapping Your Wings

Devotional for Sunday, October 20, 2002 by Anne Russell

I took a break, went outside, and observed, up in the sky, a hawk caught in the updraft of the wind, soaring with no effort. Behind it was a little bird, flapping its wings for all it was worth. Undoubtedly, the hawk had disturbed the nest and the little bird was chasing it away.

Sometimes I feel like the little bird flapping my wings for all I am worth, thinking I will never catch up to that big bird. Though I am trying mightily, I begin to feel it is a losing battle. And I do hate to give in.

Is life all about the little bird flapping its wings and getting nowhere? I think not, for in all our efforts, though they may seem futile, there is a way to gain.

1 Corinthians 15:56-58 - The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. (NIV)

We should stop flapping our wings, settle down, and start again. For, in Christ, we have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Christ has done it all for us, and, as we live for Him, we will triumph, though we live in stress, and strive for goals that seem overwhelming and so far to reach. We will continue to flap our wings with the energy we draw from Him. We are not small in the sight of God, for He has given us the strength to carry on.

Prayer: O Lord, we come to You this day, seeking strength to overcome odds that overwhelm, and events that seem to strike us down. Dear Lord, lift us up, and assure us that we are not too small in your sight, but mighty in Your power. In our need, we come to You, in Jesus' name. Amen.
