Rose Coloured Glasses

Have you ever seen chickens wearing glasses? I have. When I was about five years old, my grandfather and I raised chickens. In a flock of chickens, there is always one that loses some feathers. As soon as the other chickens see blood, they begin to attack. In a short time, the poor chicken has no feathers.

Sometimes people are this way. They see a weakness in someone, and soon all begin to attack. Have you known someone like this? As soon as they come into the school building or youth gathering, everyone begins to pick at them, just like the chickens. With chickens, this is called a pecking order, and it is no fun to be at the bottom of the pecking order.

My grandfather saw an advertisement in a seed catalogue for red glasses. The idea was that, while wearing them, a chicken could not see blood. Picture this: forty chickens walking around the yard wearing little red glasses. Guess what? The glasses worked.

This is like what should happen when we accept Christ and become his warriors. We should see people through his eyes. If we truly look at people through the eyes of Jesus Christ, we cannot see their weaknesses and faults. We need to pray for the courage to put our arm around the person being pecked, and say, "I am your friend." Jesus said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Jesus loved the oppressed and the poor in spirit, and he expects us to do the same.

Prayer: Father, may we always look at others through your eyes. May we love them the way you love us. And may we have the courage of a warrior, but also have your love in our hearts. Amen.
