A Prescription For Spiritual Health

Matthew 4:4 - Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (NIV)"Have you missed your pillbox?" my mother asked.
"Which one?" I was trying to think where or if I'd lost a pillbox. "Where did you find it?"
"In the pocket of the coat." A few days before, I'd given my mother a winter coat that I hadn't used for a year. As soon as she described the little box, I recognized it as one of my souvenirs from a trip to Colorado. Months ago, I'd given up on ever finding it again.
"Well, I hope it's not the last time you took your pills," she commented, a note of concern in her voice.
Later, when I was reflecting on our conversation, I thought about how we take medication. We can't dose up all at once, nor can we leave long periods in between doses, and hope for an illness to go away. The prescription needs to be followed exactly, and the medication taken regularly.
In the Bible, we've been given a prescription on how to overcome the trials and tribulations of the world: study the Holy Scriptures and communicate with our heavenly Father on a daily basis. Sometimes we try to make do with the spiritual feast we receive by attending church on Sunday, then allow ourselves to go for long periods without reading the Scriptures or communicating with God. But in order to maintain our spiritual health, we need to take the daily doses prescribed by our Great Physician.
Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, thank You for providing for Your children. Help us to take time to read Your Word and communicate with You on a daily basis. Amen.
