The School Bus

Devotional for Monday, April 21, 2003 by Brenda Wood

1 Corinthians 15:53-55 - In the resurrection scheme of things, this has to happen: everything perishable taken off the shelves and replaced by the imperishable, this mortal replaced by the immortal. Then the saying will come true: "Death swallowed by triumphant Life! Who got the last word, oh, Death? Oh, Death, who's afraid of you now?" (MSG)

He doesn't have temper tantrums. Screaming and yelling are unknown to him. He is a very mild-mannered little boy. Yet there, in the middle of the mall, he threw himself to the floor, flailed his arms and legs, and screamed, "I will not go to school. I will not go to school." He sobbed, "Please, don't send me away!"

In his five years, Daniel had seen many children climb onto school buses. However, he had never seen any of them come back. He was convinced that those orange vehicles swept children into some unknown space, never to return!

So it is with death. We only see the leaving. We must lean on God's promises for the rest.

Philippians 1:21 - For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (NASB)

2 Corinthians 5:8 - We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. (KJV)

Prayer: O dearest, most holy Father, thank You for telling us the truth about death. Help us to meet it with joyous expectation as the final journey unto Yourself. In Jesus' name. Amen.
