Trust

Psalm 9:10 - Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. (NIV)Psalm 31:14 - But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, "You are my God." (NIV)
One of the greatest needs for human beings is to be trusted. One of the things human beings need to do most is to trust God. Knowing how important it is to be trusted, why do we find it so hard to trust God?
For years, I worked for an employer who trusted me implicitly. I worked hard, I felt good -- I gave my best efforts to my work, because I felt trusted and appreciated. In later years, I was employed at another, much larger, place of business. I had a supervisor who did not trust anyone. Everything and everybody was audited. On an intellectual level, I knew why, and how important this was. I also knew that the innocent have to suffer with the guilty, the accurate with the careless. On the other hand, I found it hard to trust my supervisor, knowing the part that power plays in the business world. Also, I found it hard to trust someone who didn't trust me.
Yet, how well do we trust God? I have water phobia. I cannot swim -- in fact, I am afraid to take my feet off the bottom of the pool or to let my head be submerged. I am praying about this, asking God to help me to learn to trust the water and to trust him. It is a difficult struggle.
Trusting God is a two-way arrangement. God is there -- steadfast -- waiting, like the water ready to hold up the beginning swimmer. Just as the swimmer must trust the water, we must reach out to trust God, believing that he will support us.
Prayer: Lord, help us this day to place our trust in you, to let the buoyancy of your love support us as we commit trust in you to hold us up. Amen.
