Anywhere With Jesus

Devotional for Thursday, May 8, 2003 by Elaine Ingalls Hogg

Psalm 3:5-6 - I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side. (NIV)

Nighttime can be scary to a small child. I remember the time I woke up around midnight, and, in the dim light shining in from the hospital corridor, I was able to read the "No Breakfast" sign on the foot of my bed. Even though I was only seven, this was not my first visit to the hospital, and I recognized that the sign meant I would be going to the operating room the next day. Fear swept over me. In those days, parents were not encouraged to be with their children, and visits were restricted to a few hours each week. Alone, in the darkness, I began to cry.

Although no human came to comfort me, I'm happy to report that our loving God reached down, and gently reminded me of a song I had learned in Sunday School. I began to sing the words, "Anywhere with Jesus I can safely go." But the verse that comforted me the most has been omitted from several of the latest hymnals in my collection. This verse went:

    Anywhere with Jesus I can go to sleep,
    When the darkening shadows round about me creep;
    Knowing I shall waken, never more to roam,
    Anywhere with Jesus will be home, sweet home.

Whether we are going through illness, difficult times, or just times when we feel alone, our God is still the same, ready to reach through the darkness, and bring comfort to us wherever we are.

Prayer: O God, help us to be sustained by You. Help us not to fear, because we know that You have promised to be with us. Amen.
