Looking At Family Photos

Devotional for Monday, August 11, 2003 by Elaine Ingalls Hogg

Genesis 1:27 - So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (NIV)

Lately I've assigned myself the gigantic task of sorting through my lifetime collection of pictures, in order to pare down the collection to a reasonable size. The volumes were neatly stacked along one shelf in a large closet, and when this space was overgrown, I'd started to fill boxes. I put the "keepers" in one pile, but if I didn't recognize the people in the pictures, I threw them out. One picture, in particular, puzzled me. It was the picture of a lovely baby about six months old. Studying what the baby was wearing was of no help, for it was dressed in yellow sleepers. I started thinking of my friends who had babies in that particular year. In the end, the baby's eyes gave me the clue that allowed me to identify the child. The baby girl had her father's eyes.

This sorting process caused me to ponder about the characteristics others see when they are looking at us. It left me wondering if our neighbours and friends see the resemblance to our Creator when they look at us. Do we look like our heavenly Father? Does our countenance reflect the image of His holiness?

Prayer: O God, today we come to You, asking that You will help us to reflect You, our Creator, in all we say and do, so that others will see You in us. Amen.
