Come, I'm Calling You

Matthew 4:18-20 - As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him. (NIV)My dog, a white West Highland Terrier named Ben Nevis, has a way of ignoring me when I tell him to stay off the sofa or to not jump up on people who come to the door. However, if I as much as whisper the word "Come, let's go for a walk," the left ear, which usually flops down, shoots up like an antenna. His response is enthusiastic and immediate as he lets me know he has picked up my call to come. If I required further proof of his willingness to walk with me, I would only need to observe the speed of his wagging tail and the dance he orchestrates around my feet as he waits for me to put on my walking shoes.
In the early morning as I watched my dog bouncing along beside me, so enthusiastic and willing to come wherever I was leading, I thought of today's Scripture. When Simon Peter and Andrew heard Christ's call, they didn't wait for a more convenient time. They came immediately. Today Jesus invites us to come and follow Him. Will we ignore His call, or will we respond immediately, dropping the things of this world, to follow Him?
Prayer: Jesus, we pray that today many may hear Your call to become Your followers. Amen.
