Gravy Lumps

Philippians 2:3-5 - Don't be selfish; don't live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don't just think about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and in what they are doing. Your attitude should be the kind that was shown to us by Christ Jesus. (TLB)Horrors! When I hosted my first big dinner party as a new bride, the gravy formed into lumps the size of a horse's head. (All right -- a slight exaggeration here!) I quickly set the colander into the sink and began to strain the gravy. Of course, it ran out through the holes, down into the sink, and I had nothing left but gravy lumps.
I've learned a few tricks since then. Flour mixed with warm water won't form lumps. If I add plain flour right to the roast pan, I first tip all the drippings to one end and gradually work the two together with a slotted spoon.
My attitude and my cooking have both improved over the years. When I asked Jesus to forgive my sins and to come into my life, He pointed out that my bad attitude was the size of a horse's head. (No exaggeration here!) I wanted everything to go my way. I made life decisions based on what others might think. I concentrated on "me first".
Jesus is a fine chef. When He invites us to His dinner party, He strains out our lumps and makes us into main dishes made of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.
Prayer: Dear God, help us to be more like Jesus every day. Strain out our lumps. Make us into gourmet dishes suitable for the dinner party of life. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
