Scrabble Insight

Devotional for Friday, July 2, 2004 by Rosemary Hagedorn

One of my favourite games is the game of Scrabble. The game begins when each player picks a letter tile from all the letter tiles which are turned face down. The person drawing the tile closest to the letter "A" goes first. Each player then, without turning any tiles over, picks seven letter tiles, and then tries to form a word. Each player in turn places his words onto the board, and then randomly picks as many new letter tiles as he has played, always keeping seven letters in his rack.

My husband had just finished placing a word on the board, and it was my turn. As I looked at my letter tiles, I noticed that three of the seven tiles were the letters W, J, and D. As I thought about those three letter tiles, I was reminded about the letters WWJD that stand for the frequently used phrase, "What Would Jesus Do?" My gaze returned to those three letter tiles confronting me, and I thought not about what would Jesus do, but "What Jesus Did" for you and me. Jesus died on a cross for you and me, so that we may have eternal life.

John 3:16-17 - For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. (NRSV)

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for loving us so much that You would -- and did -- give us Your Son to die on a cross for our sins so that we may have eternal life. Amen.
