Chocolate Ice Cream

Devotional for Sunday, July 4, 2004 by Elaine Ingalls Hogg

Ephesians 3:17b-19 - I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge -- that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (NIV)

"It's a gift, Dad, it's a gift," my brother concluded, as over the years he watched my father enjoy bowl after bowl of chocolate ice cream. He was referring to the fact that my Dad seemed capable of consuming large amounts of this delicacy and never putting on a pound.

Apparently Dad acquired the taste for this treat from his boyhood. When telling of his early introduction, he said, "I remember the time my father gave me thirty-five cents to spend at the Dominion Day celebrations. I was about seven at the time. My brothers used their money to play games, and I suppose they bought a treat, but I didn't bother with using the money on games. Instead, I used mine on ice cream -- seven big cones of chocolate ice cream. Every time I was hungry, I bought another one."

My youngest daughter loved her grandfather, and she, too, loved ice cream. She recalls how her grandfather would go to the freezer and heap piles of the beloved treat on their bowls, filling them to overflowing.

When it comes to love, our heavenly Father is like that. His Word says that His love is "wide and long and high and deep". Today He is waiting to give us generous portions of this spiritual treat and to heap on extra portions as well.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, today we come to You in prayer, asking for You to reveal Your love to us so that we "may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God". Amen.
