Devotional for Friday, July 30, 2004 by Brenda Wood

Hebrews 4:12-13 - God means what he says. What he says goes. His word is sharp as a surgeon's scalpel, cutting through everything, whether doubt or defense, laying us open to listen and obey. Nothing and no one is impervious to God's Word. We can't get away from it -- no matter what. (MSG)

For the last ten days, while people went about their business in our local mall, some 450 people read the Bible into their lives. With the support of the Canadian Bible Society, several churches organized and carried out Proclamation Barrie, a reading aloud of the complete Word of God, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.

Folks who had never been exposed to the powerful Word of God heard for the first time about God's love for them.

When King Josiah's people did the same thing many hundreds of years ago, their city and their people made radical life changes.

2 Kings 23:21-22 - The king commanded all the people, "Keep the Passover to the Lord your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant." Surely such a Passover was not held from the days of Israel's judges, even in all the days of the kings of Israel or Judah. (AMP)

Most of us will never get to Haiti, China, or some other faraway place as missionaries. We do, however, have wonderful missionary opportunities in our own backyard. We can take a stand for God, right where we are.

Philippians 2:1,4 - If you've gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care -- then do me a favour: Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. (MSG)

Prayer: Lord, we thank You for the freedom that we have to share Your Word with others. Open our eyes to opportunities right where we are, and help us to speak Christ into the lives of others. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
