Where Has The Time Gone?

Devotional for Tuesday, August 31, 2004 by Ruth McCowan

Psalm 118:24 - This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. (NIV)

Why is it that our summer holidays always disappear so quickly? Every year as we map out what we want to do, it seems that we think we'll have lots of time to do what we want to, but before we know it, it's time to get the kids ready to go back to school. Where did the time go?

If you have children and you have had the opportunity to watch them grow up, you will also have watched time disappear very quickly. It doesn't seem that long ago that we were worrying over our children for some of the decisions that they were making with their friends -- and now they are off worrying about their own children. Where has the time gone?

When we think of days gone by and people that have gone by, it is easy to want those "good ol' days" back, but the psalmist reminds us that "this is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Each day that we are given is a gift! Each day is filled with opportunity. God has prepared today for each of us.

There is a saying that goes like this:

    Yesterday is History,
    Tomorrow is a Mystery,
    and Today is a gift.
That's why we call it the Present.

As we get ready to head back into the regular routines again after enjoying the lazy days of the summer, let's remember that each new day is a gift from God. Today He has prepared a special day of new things for us. Let us enjoy it and give thanks!

Prayer: Thank You for the gift of today. Help us to set out on today's journey with anticipation and wonder. Help us not to miss out on any of the opportunities that You have placed before us today. Thank You for always being there for us, wherever the journey of life may lead us. Amen.
